A Brief History of the "1 Image 1 Minute" Project

This project is a contemporary recreation of Une Image Pour Une Minute, a project originally produced by French director Agnes Varda for presentation on French television in 1983. In Varda's version, a photographic image appeared on television (in-between network programming), and someone--a curator, photographer, or art historian--would speak about the image for one minute.


Here I have asked contemporary photographers, artists, historians, and others to select an image that has significance for them, and write or speak about it for the equivalent of 1 minute. The result is a a compelling and accessible means of gaining insight into other artists’ and photographers’ perspectives. The project is also a way of reactivating photo history, cultural literacy, and of offering a closer look at images than the mere fraction of a second that most contemporary images are afforded.

Hot flamingo pink!
It is strident, boisterous, mischievous, effervescent.
This image is two worlds joined together.
The architectural, graphically aligned strength looking to the open ocean. The volleyball net waiting for a game. Warm pink sand to walk across, with a lifeguard tower in the distance watching.

This is my life growing up in Southern California. It is my 70’s as an adolescent.

It is always being able to feel the pleasure of your environment.
It is desire and freedom to use colors in different ways.
It is constant access to experience innovative art and architecture.
It is the ability to understand and experiment within your genre what your interior expressions are.

This Photograph, by Shelley Gazin, informs to transform my vision.

While the pink is a blast it is the delicacy of the image content with the imperfection of a strong building needing to be maintained, that within that pink glow is a power for the inner self.
